February 10, 2013 - A former Virginia correctional officer who put 62 inmates to death during a 17-year stint as the state’s executioner is now an opponent of the death penalty.
Jerry Givens is currently a board member of Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (VADP) and travels the country speaking about his time as executioner and his opposition against the death penalty. Givens cites the possibility of executing an innocent person, his relationship with God, and a four-year prison sentence that he served himself as his reasons for his newfound opposition to the death penalty.
